Lighting of Rhodes valley

The valley of Rodini dates from the 3rd to the 4th century BC. In ancient times, it was part of the Rhodian necropolis, but at the same time due to its special natural beauty, it was a place of walking and recreation. It is the only park of antiquity that has survived to this day and maintains important monumental burial structures, as well as many typical examples of Hellenistic landscape art or landscape architecture. The knowledge of this architectural expression is reflected in the architecture of the tombs, in the caves and in the sculptural interior decoration of these cave sanctuaries. Therefore, the artistic elements and the natural form of the landscape are combined into a harmonious whole.
The lighting study at this point supports the character of the Rhodes park. The main concern of the study comes with respect for space and nature. The proposed interventions in the area are mild and perfectly compatible with the spirit of antiquity, while the diffusion of light into the sky, as little as possible, reduces light pollution, but also the nuisance of living beings living in the park. The lighting of the park must be distanced from the conventional solutions and serve the spirit of the place but also the needs of the visitors.
The lighting study of the "Rodini" valley is based on two main types of lighting. Functional and scenographic lighting. The functional lighting of the park is important, as it is a natural park that can be visited and the safe passage of visitors is necessary, even in the afternoon or evening. Scenic lighting in turn ensures the visual connection between 3 axes: landscape architecture, art and history. The coexistence, mixing and enhancing of one lighting by the other results in the creation of a new type of lighting that invites visitors to expand their activities within the park even at night.
Finally, it should be noted that the main concern of this study was that the interventions in the area be mild and completely compatible with the spirit of antiquity while the diffusion of the photo to the sky as little as possible, thus reducing light pollution and nuisance of living beings living in the park.
